Kidney dialysis is the process of removing excess water, solutes, and toxins from the blood in people whose kidneys can no longer perform these functions naturally.
Kidney disease is a leading cause of death in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a staggering 37 million adults are estimated to have kidney disease in the U.S.
There are several different types of kidney disease, including chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute kidney injury (AKI). CKD refers to a progressive loss of kidney function over time, while AKI refers to sudden, but temporary, loss of kidney function due to illness or injury.
● CKD affects approximately 14% of Hispanic adults. (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, 2021)
● Non-Hispanic Blacks are 3 times more likely to develop kidney failure (ESRD) than non-Hispanic whites (CDC, 2021)
● It’s believed that African Americans are more likely to have an increased prevalence of chronic kidney disease risk factors such as diabetes and high blood pressure, along with poor accessibility to sufficient preventive care. (Harvard Health, 2021)

two multi-billion-dollar corporations. Each year they extract billions of dollars in profit from the industry. DaVita & Fresenius have been repeatedly accused by prosecutors and whistleblowers of Medicare fraud, kickbacks, patient harm, & death, bribery under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, & other wrongdoing.

Kidney failure patients need at least 3 treatments per week, of 3-4 hours per treatment, or they die in weeks or even days. Over-medicating and high-speed dialysis (high ultra filtration rate) can also harm and kill patients. We must all help to get the word out! We must all help to save a life!

The per capita costs of dialysis in the US are the highest in the industrialized world (about $35 billion per year), yet the survival rate among US patients is the lowest. One in five dialysis patients die within a year of initiating dialysis; less than half survive to five years. Studies indicate that vulnerable populations typically have shorter life expectancy; higher cancer rates; more birth defects; greater infant mortality; and higher incidence of asthma, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
These special populations are at increased risk for the negative consequences of gentrification. Displacement has many health implications that contribute to disparities among special populations, including the poor, women, children, the elderly, and members of racial/ethnic minority groups.
Gentrification operates as a social driver of health that can increase tick-borne disease (TBD) risk for communities of color through either population displacement or land-use change. At worst, gentrification can disrupt the social cohesion of a neighborhood, provoke feelings of cultural displacement, and sever social networks, thereby weakening individuals’ protective factors for mental illness.
